Butchart Gardens, Victoria, BC, Canada

We are happy to provide some information on the Butchart Gardens to assist with your trip planning. Please understand I cannot convey the beauty of these botanical gardens with mere words; seeing really is believing! Over 90% of our guests visit the Butchart Gardens. I have yet to meet one that was not amazed with the property, the plant varieties, and of course the vision that created this botanical oasis. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada, Butchart Gardens is located on the Saanich peninsula of Vancouver Island, approximately 30 minutes from downtown Victoria BC. All guests of Ashcroft House, staying in our downtown Victoria bed and breakfast are shown the scenic route thus getting an incredible view of lower Vancouver Island coastline, Victoria BC’s most famous neighbourhoods, and the sense of rural Saanich. For those of you who have left the car behind, worry not. There are several options for reaching the gardens depending on your chosen season and we are happy to help you plan.

The Butchart Gardens; in brief

A 50 foot deep hole was created after 15 years of harvesting limestone and clay for their cement factory next door. Mrs. Butchart could see beyond the desolation, truly envisioning the beginning of the sunken gardens. It was quite and undertaking in the in the early 1900′s especially for a lady who admits she knew nothing of gardening when she started. What Jennie Butchart did know was colour, as a accomplished artist she had the eye and matched her plants with a flare no one else had. That artistic eye saw rocks stacked in groups and areas, water flooding the deepest section fed by a waterfall, and of course ton after ton of topsoil brought in by horse and cart. She also saw the stark walls of the quarry lush with greenery and legend is told that when no one would assist, she slipped into a bos’un’s chair and dangled herself over the steep walls sticking ivy into any rock crevice she could find.

Of course the gardens around their residence grew with the same flare and style Jennie poured into reclaiming the quarry. The Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Italian Garden; as the gardens grew so did their reputation and the visitors just kept coming and coming. Jennie and Robert Butchart were generous people taking immense enjoyment in sharing their garden haven. As their visitors grew in numbers Butchart Garden evolved to accommodate the tours. Night Illuminations began in the fifties as did the evening entertainment and with every new innovation over the next 40 years, the mission has always stayed the same -’to warmly welcome and entertain every visitor’, and have them experience the true hospitality that the Butcharts created.

The Butchart Gardens offer a treat for the senses no matter what the season. So if you are traveling to Vancouver Island, British Columbia outside of city of Victoria’s famous summer months, you will want to check the schedule for seasonal highlights and possible reduced rates.
