David and I welcome you to Ashcroft House Bed & Breakfast in James Bay, downtown Victoria! As David is fond of saying after our 10 short years here – “we are just the current caretakers” of this fabulous old home. Please enjoy it’s wonderful energy and abundance of sunshine!
The Ashcroft House Bed and Breakfast has a long standing history in Victoria, BC. Originally built in 1898, by an Irishman named E.H. Taylor, Ashcroft House maintains its status as a heritage home to this day. Although there have been renovations to the plumbing, central heating, and wiring of the house in order to ensure all safety standards and contemporary comforts are up to date, many of the original aesthetics, both indoor and outdoor, have remained intact. Original flooring, doors, and architectural accents retain their nostalgia for the Victorian era. The five en suite rooms of the house each have their own individual character and brag the best of both worlds, simultaneously complimented by beautiful antique furniture and rejuvenated by modern amenities such as TV, free wifi, and coffee makers, to name a few.
The four course breakfasts also succeed in merging the elegance of eras past with today’s culinary sensibilities. The sunny breakfast room is decorated by a burst of blooming orchids and tables are set with flowered China dishes, crystal carafes, and white linens. The breakfasts include homemade baked goods, fresh fruit smoothies, yogurts and cereals, and a sweet or savoury hot plate. If guests are unable to attend breakfast they will be provided with breakfast-to-go to ensure nobody leaves the house hungry.
Ashcroft House is also ideally situated in the James Bay neighbourhood. James Bay is one of Canada’s oldest residential neighbourhoods on the West Coast and boasts both panoramic seaside views as well as close proximity to Victoria’s downtown core. Guests can either opt for a tranquil walk along the shore of the Juan de Fuca Strait, which looks out onto the Olympus Mountain Range of Washington state, or they can meander downtown to Victoria’s famous Inner Harbour and take in the hustle and bustle of the city. The location of Ashcroft House makes for quite nights and busy days; far enough away from the noise of the city to ensure restful sleeps, yet close enough to explore it on a whim should some excitement be required!
